PLAYACAR
A few steps south of Playa del Carmen is where Playacar begins. An upscale enclave, Playacar has an 18-hole golf course, three Maya archaeological s
ites, posh all-inclusive resorts, private villas and a beach to write home about.
Rentals abound in Playacar – for a night, a week, the full season – as long as you like. Choices include all-inclusive resorts, villas and condominiums such as Condos & Villas Xaman-Ha in Playacar, and private homes, many overlooking the golf course.
The Golf Club at Playacar boasts a driving range and clubhouse. Designed by Robert Von Hagge, its 18-hole, par 72 course is carved out of the
surrounding jungle and built around existing cenotes. It is rated as one of the most challenging courses in the Yucatan. Greens fees are US$150 and include food and beverages, and half the price of a golf-cart rental. Rates vary depending on the time of day and season. Club rentals and transportation services are available.
Playacar is home to Xaman-Ha aviary, a bird-sanctuary and botanic garden covering 3.7 aces of pristine forest. Birdwatchers will delight in the aviary’s colorful tropical birds, which include herons, macaws, flamingos, parrots and toucans.
Shoppers will find a variety of stores and boutiques as well as visitor services at Playacar’s modern
shopping mall.
Beachfront hotels run the gamut in architecture and accommodations, ranging from medium-size resorts to elegant European-style properties with impressive lobbies, sparkling fountains, pavilions and lush greenery.
